Can Dogs Become Antibiotic Resistant?

Why I wanted to learn more about antibiotic resistance

In today’s episode of what I’ve learned in vet school, I wanted to share something I found especially important: yes, antibiotic resistance matters in dogs too.

One of the first reminders in this topic is that antibiotics are for bacterial infections. They are medicines used to treat bacteria by killing them or stopping them from multiplying. But not every illness needs antibiotics, and your vet decides when they are truly needed.

The notes also highlighted that a common dog-associated bacteria often nicknamed “staph” is frequently linked to skin infections such as pyoderma.

What antibiotic resistance actually means

Antibiotic resistance means antibiotics may stop working the way we want them to.

Bacteria can become resistant, which means some are able to survive medicines used to control them. When that happens, infections can become harder to treat. Treatment may take longer, cost more, or leave fewer options. That is why antibiotic resistance matters.

A simple way to think about it is this: before treatment, there may be a mix of bacteria that are sensitive to antibiotics. After treatment, the sensitive bacteria are killed, but resistant bacteria can survive. Those resistant bacteria may then multiply and cause infections that are harder to treat.

Why this matters in Singapore

Something that stood out to me was that resistant bacteria are already showing up in local pet cases.

According to Singapore’s 2023 One Health AMR report, 60.0% of E. coli from sick pets showed resistance to ampicillin. That does not mean every pet has resistant bacteria, but it does show why responsible antibiotic use matters in animal health now. It also helps explain why protecting treatment options matters for both pets and people.

How vets approach responsible antibiotic use

Another useful point I learned is that the strongest antibiotic is not always the best one.

Responsible use means choosing the right antibiotic for the case. Vets may start with a first-line option based on the likely bacteria. Where appropriate, samples may be collected before antibiotics are given. Culture and sensitivity testing can then help guide a more targeted choice. The goal is to avoid unnecessary escalation.

In Singapore, there are also official antibiotic guidelines for pets called the Guidelines for the Prudent Use of Antimicrobials in Companion Animals. These were produced by AVS/NParks and the Singapore Veterinary Association to guide local vets on responsible antimicrobial use.

What pawrents can do

Pawrents play a part too.

Antibiotics should only be used as prescribed by your vet. Do not reuse leftover antibiotics or share them between pets. Follow the dose, timing, and treatment length given. If your dog is not improving, go back for a recheck. Small choices help keep antibiotics working.
